An Interracial Date Shouldn't Pose a Problem |

When I was single, I had no problem with going on an interracial date. In fact, I dated men outside my own race regularly. Consequently I learned things about other cultures that I may never have discovered otherwise. Here in the US some people from both the black and white community still seem to frown upon the idea of an interracial date, perhaps believing that people should stick to dating their own kind. This negative attitude is hilariously ridiculed in the 2005 movie Guess Who. In this movie, a sardonic father played by Bernie Mac makes his opinion concerning his daughter dating a white boy (Ashton Kutcher) obvious. I'll never understand why some still have a problem with the idea of the interracial date. Surely what counts is that the two people like each other and hit it off. Issues like race, religion, age and appearance should not make a difference. While I care very much about my husband's character, I'm not at all concerned about the color of his skin or his country of origin. If you choose your dates based on superficial traits like race as opposed to disposition, you are likely to be very disappointed. If you have always had qualms about going on an interracial date perhaps it's time you opened your mind and stopped limiting your possibilities. |
